The Air Station Borinquen library suffered extensive damage during and after Hurricane Maria, losing nearly 80% of its collection to water damage and mold. The library also lost its home in La Plaza when the building was condemned several weeks after the storm passed.
Volunteers on base sprang into action to save the library. Reaching out to Operation Paperback as well as friends, family, and fellow Coastie spouses via social media, we asked for donations of used books to rebuild our collection. Almost immediately, donations began rolling in from all over the United States, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Churches, scout troops, families, teachers, libraries, and businesses participated, and as of this writing (five months post-storm), we are excited to say that we have nearly replaced our entire collection.
As La Plaza remains closed, we have relocated to 115 Northeast Rd., and have reopened to serve our community. Please check the weekly Beacon email or the MWR Facebook page for our hours and offerings, as we plan to re-add fun events like craft and story times, book clubs, and more. We look forward to seeing you at the library!
